5 Adult Braces Myth Busters

If you are like most, the mention of the word ‘orthodontics’ may conjure an image of a lanky teenager with metal wires surrounding their teeth. It could be the reason why you avoid picking up braces as an adult. However, this is just a stereotype. Braces are effective for all age groups and age does not seem to play a role in treatment times. One in every five orthodontic patients is above eighteen, which means there is treatment out there to fit your lifestyle! Stereotypes about visiting an adult orthodontist and the length of treatment, often make some grown-ups shy away from correcting their malocclusions. The myth about braces being a reserve for kids and teens is the first of many. Here are five additional misconceptions about adult braces and treatment that you need to drop.

1. The Treatment Will Be Ineffective as You Are Too Old

You may be in your late 40s, 50s, or even 60s, thinking that you are way past enjoying a straight smile. However, there is no age limit to getting your teeth straightened and being proud of your smile. All treatment types work on the same principle – applying gentle pressure that gradually pushes the teeth to the correct position. This will work in the same manner, whether you are fourteen or in your fifties.

2. Braces Will Take Too Long

Patients will often come into the orthodontist’s office worried that they might have to wear braces for years. This is not necessarily the case. Your treatment span is determined by several factors, including the severity of the issue, type of braces, and how you comply with treatment. Besides, orthodontics is a continually advancing field. Current appliances, systems, and techniques now significantly decrease the amount of time that you may have to wear braces.

3. Wearing Aligners is a Painful Process

Braces from the late twentieth century may make you imagine huge, painful, ugly metal chunks. Today’s modern aligners are far more effective and more gentle than ever before. Your Invisalign adult orthodontist may prescribe clear, plastic retainers, or aligners, that have zero sharp edges. These aligners reduce the chances of irritation. Additionally, modern metal braces are smaller and more comfortable to wear now. With a little orthodontic wax, over the counter pain reliever, and soft food options (like ice cream or mashed potatoes), you can effectively manage the initial discomfort in the first few days.

5. Metal Braces Are the Only Option

As an adult that is already feeling self-conscious about your teeth, the last thing you would wish is to attract more attention to them. While modern metal braces are smaller and less noticeable, some may still feel uncomfortable wearing them. You can find more subtle options such as lingual braces, clear braces, and Invisalign or clear aligners.

I know I probably expressed my own opinions a little more than I listened to my Doctor’s advice at times , but Dr.Best was always so kind, patient, and willing to listen to me. He always took the time to explain everything from the patient’s perspective, which I really appreciated.I also loved that he clearly explained what the next steps would be and what the plan was moving forward, so I always knew what to expect. Everyone else in the office was also incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made every visit feel comfortable. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, remember that you’ll likely be visiting the same office regularly for 1.5–2 years, so choosing a place where you feel comfortable and trust your orthodontist really matters. I definitely recommend this office. You won’t regret choosing them! Thank you so so much
