When Should Your Child Get Braces?

The early years of a child’s development are important for proper dental health. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, you should schedule an evaluation as soon as any orthodontic problems appear, but no later than age seven. Early orthodontic treatment ensures that braces can be fitted before more complex issues develop with the child’s teeth, jaw, or gums. Let’s learn more about when a child should get braces.

When is the Best Time for Braces?

The best time to get braces is once the baby teeth have all fallen out and the adult teeth have grown in. Even adults can get braces. However, when a child is 11-14 years old, the face and jaws have completed most of their growth. At this age, orthodontic treatment can correct misaligned teeth and ensure a perfect smile. Orthodontists can also identify early signs of more serious alignment issues that may need to be corrected with braces later on.

Signs That Your Child May Need Braces

If you notice early orthodontic problems such as a crossbite, crowding of teeth, or a deep bite in your child’s mouth, don’t hesitate to seek early orthodontic treatment. Other signs that your child may need braces include persistent mouth breathing and thumb sucking, early tooth wear, difficulty with speech, and jaw pain.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early treatment can help guide the growth of your child’s jaws and ensure that their teeth are properly aligned. It can also prevent the need for more complex treatments such as extractions and jaw surgery later on. Additionally, early orthodontic treatment can help your child avoid problems with speech development, eating, tooth decay, or gum disease.

When to See an Orthodontist

Early orthodontic treatment can start as early as your child’s seventh birthday. Your orthodontist will know if braces are needed and what type is best for your child’s situation (metal braces, ceramic, clear aligners, etc.). The sooner treatment starts, the sooner the child will have aligned teeth. A child may have to wear braces for up to 24 months, but early orthodontic treatment can help minimize the time spent in braces.

A good smile is something to be proud of, and early orthodontic treatment can help ensure that your child has the perfect smile. If you notice any early signs of orthodontic problems, make an appointment with Best Smiles as soon as possible.

Mondaywas my first time going there for a consultation I had Lindsey. Dr. Best came in and did the consultation and I got great news from both Dr.Best and my dentist as well that I was able to get braces. I got braces today August 6th 2026. I had Rebecca she is awesome . She made me feel comfortable explained everything to me. It was a great experience. I would highly recommend. The ladies up front are friendly and welcoming. Also what I really like is if you havr no insurance they do a payment plan. I am so blessed on my journey. Thank everyone there.

From the moment we walked in, Dr. Best and his entire team were incredible. They were so kind, patient, and knowledgeable, especially with my son, who has autism and ADHD. They took the time to answer every question, never made us feel rushed, and made sure my son felt comfortable every step of the way. Everyone was genuinely friendly and personable, and you can tell they truly care about their patients. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend!
