5 Early Warning Signs You Need Braces As An Adult

Braces are traditionally thought of as a treatment for children. But many adults suffer from the same conditions that require braces, which is one reason why 1 in 5 orthodontic patients are adults. If you have recently noticed any of the following five signs in your mouth, it’s time to schedule a consultation with a local orthodontist.

1. Increased Jaw Pain

If you find yourself experiencing regular, consistent pain in your jaw or ear, this could be a sign of TMJ, a problem usually caused by an overbite. When your teeth are crowded and overlapping, they can put a lot of pressure on certain parts of the mouth, sparking pains in the jaw.

2. Difficulty Chewing

If you have been struggling to chew your food recently, it may be a sign of a poor bite alignment in your mouth. If your teeth are overlapping or pushed inward, this can affect how you eat and cause jaw pain. The good news is that bite problems are usually relatively easy to correct with braces to help bring your teeth into a straighter, more comfortable position.

3. Self-Consciousness Over Appearance

Even if your teeth are healthy, straightening them can make a huge difference to how you feel about your smile. If you avoid smiling or laughing because of your teeth, braces can help boost your confidence and make your smile more beautiful.

4. Grinding Your Teeth at Night

If you or your spouse have recently noticed that you grind your teeth at night, it’s time to get checked out by an orthodontist. Grinding your teeth not only causes unattractive wear and tear, but it can also lead to TMJ pain in the face and jaw and, in extreme cases, tooth loss.

5. Frequent Headaches

Frequent headaches may be a sign of an issue with your bite. When your teeth are crowded or overlapping, the muscles in your face have to work harder to chew and speak. This can lead to pain in the back of the head, neck, and shoulders. Sometimes, moving your lower jaw forward can help alleviate these headaches. However, if you are looking for a more permanent solution, it’s time to see an orthodontist.

If you notice any of the five warning signs, it’s time to see an orthodontist as soon as possible. These problems, if left untreated, can become even more painful and expensive to correct later on. Call us today to schedule your appointment.
